The bulk carrier Pasha Bulker ran aground on Newcastle's Nobbys Beach under a brilliant full moon during a wild storm on 8 June 2007.

For just over three weeks it treated its host city to a stream of visiting tourists and national media attention. There was a carnival atmosphere. (We doubt that the beach cafe has ever sold so many bacon and egg rolls to visiting gawkers.)

The 40,000 tonne coal carrier was guided to deeper water by three tugs at about 9:37 PM (AEST) on 2 July 2007.

CustOMER Craig ("Moose") Moore reckons that life was a whole lot better with a giant container ship sitting on one of our beaches. (Reminds us of the people who wanted to chain themselves to the volley ball stand on Bondi Beach after the 2000 Olympic Games ... demanding its retention.)
