I am: Coast Dweller, Connector, Consultant, Creative & Design, Designer, Entrepreneur, Global Soul, Idea Generator, Mac User, Marketer, Married, Optimist, Parent, Taurus, Writer/Editor My Profile: REMOGeneralStore.com/REMO My Sex: Male My Birthday: 25 April 1960 My Preferred REMO T Shirt Size: S About Me: I live and work in Sydney with my wife Melanie and two children: Lola 16 and Roman 12. I work a lot (because I love it) but often with the family around. I've been working on REMO now for almost 20 years. It's been a journey full of ups and downs but, more than anything else, I feel fortunate that my vision has remained clear and constant. My favourite new quote (now a REMO T Shirt) from Robert L. Stevenson sums it up: To travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive, and the true success is to labour. Follow me on twitter HERE. I'm Passionate About: My family, Bondi Beach, TriBeCa, Lonelyville Fire Island, the strip of Sydney coast running from Ben Buckler to Bronte Pool, sushi, sake red wine, fresh spices, open fires, cooking outside, oceans, islands, Haigh's Chocolate Frogs, Valobra soaps, Northern Light Candles, lap swimming at the sea pool at the Bondi Icebergs, going to see films with my wife, DVDs in bed with the kids ... and, most of all ... passion itself. My REMO Story: Would everyone please buy a lot of merchandise. Beast needs feeding. My DesignsMy CustOMER NetworkCustOMER Network HeadsMy FavouritesMy CustOMER Poll SelectionsMy Wishlist

The architect Mies Van Der Rohe said that: "God is in the details"; and that is definitely the case with this garment. Over the years, we've rejected more samples than I care to recall. Indeed, every detail has been hard fought ... over and over again: every dimension, the weight of the fabric (200gsm, most recently we rejected 194gsm even though it delayed our launch by over a month), the width of the neck band (11mm +/- 1mm FYI), the quality of the stitching. I could go on, and on ... This T Shirt started out as a personal passion ... but fast became a collective customer obsession. I have happily worn these T Shirts (and ONLY these T Shirts) since 1988 ... and I strongly recommend the same dedication to you! Wed 14 Nov 2001 | 03:59 AM SYD EST Design | Sean's Panaroma | 2002
We lived 100 metres from Sean's for a number of its early years. It was so apparent to us as soon as it opened that Sean and Michael were both passionate about their produce and food. That balance of sand-in-your-toes casual and super-fresh simple quality is very Australian I think. No constructed towers of food, no garnish, just uncompromisingly good stuff on a clean white plate. And then there was the time that we took a dear friend from LA to show off our favourite haunt. Fresh local "Jewfish" was on the blackboard that night, and this friend actually thought that we'd organised some kind of playfully anti-semitic gag. My favourite REMO T Shirt .... and for a while there Tucker V owned the only one in existance. I was very jealous. Once I borrowed it to scan. Thought he might not remember to ask for it back ... but he did. Mon 28 Jan 2002 | 03:45 PM SYD EST Design | Hell Bank Note | 2002

This word is more than just another example of bad punctuation. CustOMER is what (to date) we have been calling someone who dwells, not only in a physical place, but also within the parallel REMO universe. It took 8 years (and a mirror) to figure this one out! Sun 24 Mar 2002 | 07:47 PM SYD EST
In my school his name was Martin Miles. His herosim (and intestinal fortitude) were unquestioned. His recipe: a healthy shmear of Perkin's Paste sandwiched between 2 pieces of plain white paper. Remarkable. Mon 25 Mar 2002 | 09:05 PM SYD EST Thing | Darrell Lea Bo Peeps | 1989
Growing up in Sydney in the 60s: bus to town, lunch at Cahill's (or Coles Cafeteria) & a jar of Bo Peeps on the way home. Sat 21 Jun 2003 | 05:11 AM SYD EST
Didn't know anything about this gal, but for me it was love at first sight. Sat 21 Jun 2003 | 10:49 PM SYD EST
I have managed to continue my Valobra habit ... even during the REMO down years. Sensible stock-piling in 1996 ... and a chance encounter with some bars in a New York pharmacy in 2000 has kept my family happily lathered to this day. Just as well. Valobra is a very hard habit to kick. Sat 21 Jun 2003 | 10:51 PM SYD EST
We've done a bit of moving around these past years. We first encountered Yorkshire Gold in a gourmet supermarket in the Napa Valley, and we've never looked back. In New York we tracked down a source in TriBeCa, near to where we lived. Yorkshire Gold has become an indispensible aspect of our morning routine. No other cup of tea comes close. I can't actually remember what I was wearing before I started wearing my M&Co. Bodoni watch. I think it must be 15 years old. Never had a problem with it. Looks great. Feels great. Tue 14 Oct 2003 | 10:31 PM SYD EST Thing | Chinese Calendar | 2003
Roman's birthday (23 December 1998) is framed and on our living room wall. Lola's birthday (20 March 1995) lives somewhere in one of our glory boxes, along with many other green numbered pages: anniversaries, store birthdays, and sundry other family milestones stretching back 10 or 20 years. But, it hasn't made me blasé about the visual. I still get a thrill when I see them hanging out the back in Chinese restaurants or laundries. Took the studio sample to the beach over Christmas & New Year. Works an absolute treat. Garnered lots of quizzical (and then envious) glances in the Port Willunga area! Wed 21 Jan 2004 | 01:47 PM SYD EST Thing | Russell's Dukkah | 2004
Always a highlight of our Christmas trips to Adelaide. Russell's is a unique experience and a rare treat. Happy that Russell is able to offer us this Dukkah as a souvenir of his genius. Thu 5 Feb 2004 | 12:47 PM SYD EST Thing | Haigh's Chocolates | 1992
When Melanie and I moved to the US in 1997 we included 50 boxes of the chocolate frogs within our hand luggage. That's how serious we were about our shared addiction. They only lasted 6 months. We were so eager for others to taste the difference that we squandered our booty too quickly. Desperate to have convenient supply line re-opened. Tue 6 Apr 2004 | 01:58 PM SYD EST Thing | Penelope Sach Herbal Teas | 1992
Maybe it's age, but I find myself getting more and more pleasure from herbal tea ... and less from coffee or black tea (other than a single cup at the beginning of the day). I really like Penelope's organic peppermint (into which I sometimes throw some fresh ginger). Also her Apres and Triple E are pretty great. Tue 4 May 2004 | 12:35 PM SYD EST Thing | ZOOB Modelling System | 2004
First encountered Zoob at a store in the Stanford Mall, soon after we moved to the US in 1997. Felt immediately (and deep within my merchant's bones) that this toy had everything going for it: good design, strong branding & that extra dash of magic that makes some things great. Spent hours making dinosaurs and crowns with my daughter Lola in our Mountain View rumpus room, marvelling all the while at this next-generation Lego. And then the brand disappeared. Googled them every so often, but to no avail. Managed to buy some boxes via eBay before we left the US in 2001. Kept searching online from time to time from down here in Sydney. Eventually, they re-emerged, and we made contact with the new owners. (Love the new packaging.) So, Zoob sets now take pride of place here in our General Store. Oh Joy! I'm a fan of thought ... so this T Shirt suits me fine. I wear one which is printed white on white ... so, you really have to think (and look) hard. Mon 22 May 2006 | 07:38 PM SYD EST Thing | Whittaker's Chocolate | 2006
Most of the new ideas for REMO are NOT mine, but I AM going to take credit for this one. Here's how it unfolded: I was at the "House of Chocolates" on Bondi Road (a favourite local haunt) hunting and gathering the customary loose pieces of milk chocolate covered Turkish delight for DVD watching family. While at the counter I spotted a "Whittaker's Peanut Slab" with nice ye olde graphics and thought to myself ... anything that has can boast the word "SLAB" in its product description belongs within the Special Things portfolio at REMO. So, I added one to the bag of Turkish delight and trotted off home. After sharing said slab with the family (very nice) I went to the company website (url printed on the packaging) and had a poke around. I was impressed with the blocks range and LOVED the fact that this chocolate was produced amidst the relative purity of the New Zealand environment. The real hook however was discovering that they roasted their own beans ... just like Haigh's. The merchant in me awakened ... big time. We contacted the company and did some research. All good. Dare we hope? It would all come down to the TASTE of the chocolate blocks. Whttaker's sent us some samples. I was home at the time writing the weekly broadcast. Melanie called to say: "Darling, you won't believe what just arrived ... a LOT of chocolate from Whttaker's." So ensued the staff take-home-pack allocation ... and the receipt of glowing reports all round (even from fussy Glenn)! That was a week ago ... and here we are launching. Things happen quickly in REMO World, especially when they feel so right! Fri 1 Dec 2006 | 10:28 AM SYD EST Design | Tribute to E.W. Cole | 2007
Here's me post laps this morning at the Bondi Icebergs pool wearing my new E.W. Cole T Shirt. (Note too the 15 year old fringed beach towel ... but please try to ignore the yellow thongs.) Thinks: Must talk to Hilary Bell about merchandising hook-up for new musical that she's writing with husband Phillip on Cole. Wed 7 Mar 2007 | 11:14 AM SYD EST Thing | Girl Stuff by Kaz Cooke | 2007
Our daughter Lola went to a signing and came back with a copy of Girl Stuff. Then she sat down and read whole slabs of it. She loves it. Then we looked up the section on pimples (it's been a while) and got caught up on all of the new thinking. Great. I'm a bit biased because Kaz is a good CustOMER. Even so, I reckon this book is special. Tue 6 Nov 2007 | 01:37 PM SYD EST

We were living in New York in 2000 when Al Gore controversially lost Florida ... and the Presidency that he was due. That hurt. Talk of "hanging chads" still breaks me out in a sweat. I knew Keith from when I lived in New York in the 80s. We ate at the same sushi bar in the East Village. That sushi bar was called ISO and Keith designed their T Shirts. When I left NY to return to Sydney, I went to see him and he agreed to let me represent him and sell his Pop Shop merchandise exclusively in Australia (even though I hadn't yet thought about how I was going to be doing that). Many would remember our Haring display on the far back corner of the Darlinghurst space ... covered in badges and caps. Wed 9 Sep 2009 | 07:14 AM SYD EST

My mum tells me (and there's no reason for her to lie) that I was obsessed with Cuisenaire Rods as a child ... and that might be why Sister Annette called me The Professor. (I also remember the time that Gregory Pender swallowed a number two and Mother Declan had to take him to sick bay.) To me these blocks had everything going for them: mathematical correctness, construction potential ... and lots of nice colours. Fri 26 Oct 2001 | 08:13 AM SYD EST

It's fascinating how people often arrive at the same conclusions but via very different paths. I thought this exact same thought (but not in these words) on a ferry between Long Island and Fire Island NY in July 2001. Only later, during an empathetic conversation with dear friend Mark E. Pollack, was I made aware (by him) that Robert Louis Stevenson had been there before .... and actually much more elegantly. Sat 9 Feb 2002 | 11:10 PM SYD EST
Steve and I go way back ... not quite to the days of the abovementioned tortoise, but almost. We share a certain complexion ... and some unfortunate photographs from our surfy teen years. Sandman thinks in a unique way and says very funny things (most of which we've been hearing over and over again for almost 20 years). Cheers to Steve ... and to Sandy. There was a particular time of year (maybe it was Easter) when we would go to mass as a family in the City (rather than in Kensington where we lived). On these occasions we would go to a church in Haymarket, and during this annual visits I would often see the Eternity messages on the footpaths. I remember that seeing them made me feel better than I felt when I was in the church. Tue 16 Apr 2002 | 09:28 PM SYD EST Design | Bondi Icebergs | 1988
In 1987, back from New York, living in Bondi and completely agog with the beauty of the beach, I joined the Icebergs. I joined with my friend Dare, and we hung in there for 3 and a half years before simultaneously spitting the dummy. Dare's business travel schedule took precedence, and my wife Melanie fell out of love with the idea of losing me every Sunday morning to what was then a men only activity. In those days it was all brown leathery guys sun bathing naked, reading race forms, shaving in the sauna (illegal), and drinking cold beer. Moved overseas for a bunch of years, so membersghip was moot. Joined again in 2006. Ready to complete my tour of action! These days, it's much more diverse: women, teenagers, families, dags & hipsters alike ... and a very vibrant Sydney scene Wed 7 Aug 2002 | 01:14 AM SYD EST
These were our ideas. We have a feeling that you could do even better e.g. Joanne passed someone's OWNER OCCUPIED idea on to us just then ... which is a riot. My most memorable exposure to the cult of the Altoids tin was in 1998. Matt Bernardini, the CTO of Organic in New York, displayed a passion for Altoids tins. Every available surface in his office was furnished with the cute red empties. Mon 4 Aug 2003 | 04:44 PM SYD EST Thing | Oregon Scientific Wall Clock | 2003
Coincidentally, the very same day that we received the ranging suggestion from CustOMER David Champtaloup we spotted one of the Jumbo Weather Clocks on the kitchen wall at another CustOMER's house (MAMBO Founder Dare Jennings). These two events in combination were enough to convince us to look further into it. Meeting with Hamish Pearce and other members of the local Oregon Scientific team here in Sydney clinched it for us. I learnt to juggle using this kit. It was 1984 and I was living in a student dormitory on the Upper West Side in New York. Juggling became a welcome distraction from my business studies, but I also recall the strong general sense of achievement I felt in learning this quintessential party trick. Netherlands Rob, maybe yours is a different version? Mine is still happily squeaking after 11 years or sporadic use. It comes with a capsule full of rosin (you know the stuff they use on voilins). Phillip Starck is so smart ... such a fresh thinker ... king of his craft. We've had his things in our range since Day One (starting with the Ray Hollis ashtray in 1988). I collared him recently at the launch of these clocks at the AGNSW in Sydney and we reminisced re earlier Starck at REMO promotions. Hopefully, this one will do just as well. Padded Crumpler computer bags are great, but my particular needs are better served by a Seedy Three with an enclosed School Hymn. My computer (protected by the latter) just gets thrown into the Seedy Three, alongside books, towel, wet suit, flippers, whatever ... Laptop protection happens at a sub level within the larger and more generic encasement of the shoulder bag. That's my solution. What's yours? The magnets are very strong. My son Roman's hand need to be dry for him to have any chance of pulling one off.
