This remarkable thing is a working reproduction of a vintage tin device. Strange as it looks, it is actually a functional and accurate multiplying machine.

The monkey is perched above a pyramid of numbers. When you point his feet at the numbers on the bottom, his monkey hands move and show you the multiple of those two numbers in a little window.

The calculator was patented June 27, 1916, by William Robertson, of Belmont, Ohio, and assigned to the Educational Novelty Company, Dayton, Ohio.

And as it says on the old box:

"IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE TO THE MONKEY WHETHER CHILDREN ARE BRIGHT OR STUPID, HE NEVER LOSES PATIENCE AT HAVING TO ANSWER THEIR QUESTIONS."

I have now bought 3 of these little monkeys. They look really old fashioned and being made of tin they have a great feel. And the monkey is always right! My girls have had a great time playing with ours and now we are giving them away as gifts!
